7 Ways to Grow Your Business with Temporary Workers

America’s workforce is changing. By 2020, 50% of all workers are projected to be self-employed. This includes independent contractors, freelancers, consultants and other work arrangements where the relationship between the business and the worker is temporary.

Optimizing the Temporary Worker Relationship

While moving toward a self-employed workforce can present some challenges, there are also many benefits. Workers have more flexibility in where and how they work, and businesses have more control in driving growth by having the right skills in place at the right time – no sooner and no longer than necessary.

Taking advantage of these benefits requires changing the way many small businesses manage their staffing needs in order to accommodate contingent workforce solutions. Here are 7 recommendations to consider:

  1. Align Strategy with Talent | If your business strategy is to grow by providing “X” volume of products and services to a specific target market over the next three years, how is this approach supported by your existing workforce today?
  2. Use Temporary Staffing for Temporary Needs | Based on your outcomes from recommendation #1 above, develop a forecast to identify your staffing objectives, goals and dates that will support having the right skills on the team when you need them, and only for as long as you need them.
  3. Create a more Holistic HRM Approach | Integrate human resource management functions, such as onboarding, training and performance reviews to measure worker effectiveness against your business objectives.
  4. Beef up Compliance | Labor and tax laws continue to evolve and define what constitutes an independent contractor versus an employee. When temporary workers are engaged at your facility, require them to provide proof of Workers’ Compensation insurance and LLC status to protect your business from costly fines and back payroll taxes.
  5. Tie Costs to Performance | Centralize tracking and accounting for all forms of temporary staff spending such as project-based work, temporary hires, independent contractors, etc., to effectively measure impact and ROI.
  6. Leverage Technology | Leverage a technology-enabled Master Vendor program to reduce time spent on managing and securing your talent. A Master Vendor program provides a centralized portal for managing project-based work including candidate reviews, timekeeping, and detailed reporting and analytics.
  7. Prepare for Growth | Leverage and partner with a Managed Service Provider (MSP) that offers greater access to talent, improved quality of work and risk mitigation, to help you save time and money while improving people performance.
