Dental Insurance: The Cost/Benefit Equation

When it comes to taking care of yourself and your family, prevention is often the best medicine. This is particularly true for oral health, which is highly correlated to overall health.

Good oral health includes routine dental cleanings and x-rays. These practices help to prevent more costly dental expenses as potential problems can be identified sooner rather than later.

Prevention is The Best Medicine

Prevention is perhaps the best reason for investing in a small business Dental Benefits Plan. Practicing good dental hygiene can prevent most forms of dental disease. It is also less expensive to practice good preventative oral care than to pay for costly treatments related to problems that can and do arise given a lack of care.

From a larger economic perspective, public health studies report that practicing good preventative dental care, including early detection and proper treatment of any dental issues, represents an annual savings of $4 billion to the U.S. economy (America's Oral Health Report). This also means tax savings for you and your business. For every $1 spent on preventive measures in oral health, American taxpayers save up to $50 in restorative and emergency procedures related to under and uninsured patient care (NCOHF, 2013).

More Money in Your Wallet

Dental insurance benefits are designed to encourage preventive care over restorative care, which offers tremendous savings in the long run. Two dental exams and cleanings each year, for example, are less expensive than fillings, extractions, root canals and treatments for gum disease.

Preventive care Dental Benefits typically include 100% coverage for routine oral exams and cleanings, as well as coverage for routine x-rays, oral cancer screenings and annual fluoride treatments for children. Oral cancer screenings can represent up to a 60% savings in overall treatment expenses when caught in the early stages - not to mention the added peace of mind knowing that this potentially serious health issue has been productively addressed?!?

In summary, when you compare the costs for routine preventive dental services against the premiums for dental insurance, the savings can add up quickly. To learn more about various options when purchasing an individual or family plan, read How to Choose a Dental Benefits Plan.
