OFFICE OF CONSUMER CREDIT REGULATION
Enforces Maine state consumer finance laws such as the Maine Consumer Credit Code (Title 9-A, MRSA) as it applies to all creditors and lenders other than banks and credit unions. Enforcement extends to other statutes as well, including the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and Maine's "Plain Language" Law. The office regulates retail creditors, pawnshops, rent-to-own stores, mortgage companies, loan arrangers and credit bureaus. In addition, the office is responsible for ensuring legal compliance by money order issuers, operators of non-bank ATMs and debt management service providers (credit counselors). The office also enforces Truth in Lending credit disclosure requirements.
