4 Drivers Behind Temporary Staffing Trends
More and more employers are hiring workers on a non-permanent basis. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, 40% of Americans are currently working under these conditions. What are some of the common drivers for temporary work and how might they affect how you approach staffing in your small business?

When to Hire Non-Permanent Workers
Acknowledging the need for employing people on a temporary basis can be tricky. Business owners often find themselves in limbo; wondering whether to hire or just "tough it out." Here are some common scenarios when a temporary staffing approach makes sense.
- Gap in Coverage | When an employee is out of work for an extended period of time, such as for maternity/paternity leave or when suffering a short-term illness or disability, a temporary replacement offers a cost-effective solution for maintaining work flows.
- Specialized Talent | Rapid changes in market forces often create business opportunities. This may require temporary access to a higher level of professional or technical expertise, such as from a scientist, engineer or other specialized disciplines.
- Minimize Risk | Try before you buy. Getting the wrong fit between a new employee and your business culture can cause all kinds of problems. Also, you may not be sure whether you need that additional skill for the short-term or the long-term. In both cases, 47 percent of firms prefer the opportunity to gauge the right fit before deciding whether to commit to a longer, more permanent working relationship.
- Rapid Growth | The old adage, “You snooze, you lose” applies in business. When you land a huge order or experience seasonal fluctuations in demand, you want your team to be ready to fill these needs. This may mean enhancing your capacity in the areas of finance and accounting. For more specialized workforce solutions, you may want to look at a talent supply chain management approach.
There are other drivers that make a temporary staffing solution more attractive as well. The key is staying on top of changes in your marketplace so that you can adjust your staffing mix when you need more flexibility or expertise.
